okay I got on the web and looked at the species you suggested, the first one is close in body shape but that is all. Mine is shaped much like the paradise fish but he is all bright yellow you can faintly see his stripes. What made me think he was a cichlid is he has three yellow spots on his anal fin and I saw him do the mating dance.(shivers) The paradise fish were not impressed. lol

It depends on the species of cichlid and whether it actually is a Dwarf Cichlid …. then it depends on tank size.

The only common “dwarf” cichlid that I could see being confused as a Killifish would a Krib … and the more “uncommon” side one of the Dicrossus species. Either of those would be fine with a Paradise Fish as long as the tank was 15+g.

Now the flip-side … another commonly available cichlid that could be confused when younger (because of body shape) would be one of the Pike cichlids … Crenicichla species.
In that case,the answer is a definite NO no matter how big the tank.

Research all three …. Krib,Dicrossus,Crenicichla to try to make a determination. None of those,check Apistogramma species … and if not one of those either … then it is probably not compatible either because of water chemistry required or aggression.

Never purchase anything without a 100% ID.

So I was wondering if this setup (with a heater clearly and plenty of things in the aquarium to hide in and explore) would be at all possible for any kind of cichlid, i was assuming a dwarf cichlid would be closer to possible than a normal sized cichlid. I’m not going to buy something that wouldn’t work, I was just curious and please be nice in your answers, I’m not going to put one in there if it doesn’t work.

I’ve just been curious about keeping cichlids for some time and wanted to know if there is a species that this is suitable for, if not then I won’t be keeping one.

these are all just fish that i thought were good looking fish, i have no idea their personalities so do you think that you could pick a stocking idea out of that list of fish? what you would do.

2 rams- 1 male and 1 female
1 blue paradise gourami,
1 albino peacock cichlid
1 demasoni cichlid,
1 electric yellow cichlid,
1 red peacock cichlid,
1 double full red cockatoo cichlid,

how does that sound? would that be to much? out of those fish i just named, what would your stocking be with those? my idea was to just get 1 fish for every color, so like 1 blue cichlid, 1 yellow, 1 red, 1 orange, 1 purple, 1 green- like that. i want this tank to have the best looking fish. so that is why i choose some of the fish i listed.
please to do not freak out on me for wat ever reason cuz im inexperienced when it comes to semi agressive fish. peaceful fish i no but not agressive!

german rams- finicky little fish. Need VERY soft water and warmer water than most other fish will tolerate at 85 degrees. The PH should be around 6.5 and the tank should be MATURE before adding them. They do not do well with other dwarf cichlids such as the apistogrammas you mentioned.

-assorted apistogramma- Not a good idea. One kind and 2 pairs max for a 40 gallon tank. They do not mix very well. They also need soft water and mature tanks. PH should be around 6.0

-double full red cockatoo cichlid- Considered an apistogramma

red parrot- Parrot Ciclids need 55 gallons

double full red agassizi cichlid — An apistogramma

albino peacock cichlid- An african cichlid needing 7.8 PH or more. Should only be mixed with other Malawian Cichlids. Never mix them with dwarf or new world/ Central American Cichlids.

blue johanni cichlid- African Ciclid

blue peacokc cichlid- African Cichlid

damasoni cichlid- Need larger tanks and are aggressive. African Cichlid

electric yellow cichlid- African Cichlid and aggressive.

blue paradise gourami- Do not mix these with African Cichlids

gold gourami- Do not mix these with paradise fish or rams or african cichlids

american flag fish- Nippy semi tropical species. Temp should be 72 ish.

puffer fish- Only if that’s all you want in the tank. Dwarf puffers are the only commonly available freshwater species of puffer and are tiny. They should not be housed with any of the other fish you have listed. Figure 8′s are 3-4 inches large and a strictly brackish species. Green spotted puffers are VERY aggressive and need brackish into full marine tanks as they age.

peacock gudgeon- Interesitng but finicky little fish. Require more of a fresh/ frozen diet to maintain their color and mature tanks. Should not be housed with african Cichlids.

2 rams- 1 male and 1 female
1 blue paradise gourami,
1 albino peacock cichlid
1 demasoni cichlid,
1 electric yellow cichlid,
1 red peacock cichlid,
1 double full red cockatoo cichlid,

There’s many things wrong with your stocking plan. 1. Rams need temps of 85 and none of the other fish do. 2. Paradise fish dont make good tank mates with any of the other fish listed. 3. Peacocks are african chichlids and need a PH of 7.8 and not 6.0 like the rams. 4. Demasoni’s need larger tanks and get more agressive than the other ones you listed. 5. Electric yellows are african Cichlids and agressive. 6. Peacocks are african Cichlids. 7. Cockatoo’s are apistogramma’s, should not be housed with other dwarf Cichlids or african cichlids.

Here’s a better plan.

1. A pair of Apistogramma’s
2. 6-10 2 inch tetra’s
3. 6 hatchets or other top dwelling species
4. PH 6.5 temp 78-80, feeding them high quality pellets and blood worms

Plan 2

1. 5 “assorted” african Cichlids (pick ones of different color if you like but be aware they will hybridize and create unwanted sometimes ugly fry)
2. PH 7.8-8.2 temp 80, feed them a high quality pellet

Plan 3

1. One BREEDING pair of Angelfish.
2. 6-8 “taller) 2 inch tetra’s like skirts or serpae’s. No neons, or thin streamline fish as they will be eaten.
3. 5 corries

EDIT: Plan 2 is a stocking plan. At Petsmart they have a tank labeled “Assorted African Cichlids”. There’s electrics, kenyi, zebras, peacocks to name a few. Basically random Cichlid fry they get in. Get 1-2 inch ones. They will settle in better and will grow up together. Decorate the tank with rock layers big enough for them to get in between to hide in.

can you tell us a little information about how big your tank is and how long you’ve had it set up etc.

I’ve never kept any of the fish you’ve listed however i’ve heard that the redtail sharks can get very big, but then so do the fish that you have already so i assume that you have a fairly large tank?

my boyfriend bought a yellow lab. along with a ‘pseudotropheus salousi’ and not only are they a great colour they have great personalities (and as it’s also an african cichlid it’ll stand up for itself like the others) thought i’d recommend this fish for you to consider from personal experience, they grow to roughly the same size as yellow labs and are also lake malawi/african cichlids (:

I have a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium. I have been thinking about what fish to have in it for a while. I think I finally got everything figured out:

Fish I currently have in the tank:
~3 Zebra Danios
~2 Longfin Zebra Danios

Fish I plan to get:
~1 more Longfin Zebra Danio
~2-3 Nerite Snails
~1 Agassiz’s Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma agassizi)
~6-10 Green Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon simulans)
(Note about the tetras: I’m unsure about the amount of them I should get. AqAdvisor said 10 would be fine filtration capacity wise, and would only be at a 85% stocking level. But, a group of 10 would bring the fish count, including the snails, to 20. How many do you guys think I should get?)

Any extra information you may have about any of the above species, except about both kinds of danios, I would love to hear it.

It’s ok, even a little overstocked is fine. I think that’ll look great.
you’ll have some trouble with getting the green neons to live, they’re supposed to be quite sensitive initially. You may need live foods for them when you first get them, bloodworms, mosquito larvae, daphnia.

First, it depends on the size of your tank. You know bala sharks are a schooling fish right? ANd they need to be kept in groups of 4-5+. And they grow to 12 inches long…

Catfish is a very broad category. You need to find out what kind of catfish it is. Some can grow large and most of them eat whatever will fit in their mouth.

You are mixing african and south american cichlids here. Your tank setup isnt the greatest. The eel is sensitive. The fire mouth will probably eventually kill him. Any african cichlid will most likely kill him. Gouramis are usually peaceful. They should not be kept with cichlids.

Each one of these fish you have, require different water conditions. Dont add anymore fish.

Which one is the least aggressive? Which one is hardier? Which one is more entertaining? Do i have to keep them in pairs or can i keep one by itself with tetras/ barbs? Also, what about cockatoo dwarf cichlid?

I would say from my own experience that Kribensis are hardier — but they are also much more aggressive — especially in breeding condition — in a 20 gall community tank a pair of Kribensis wouldnt allow any other fish to feed in the bottom lower half of the tank — they are very territorial.

Blue Rams are much less aggressive but also are much more delicate to get established.

Kribs in a 20 gallon community wouldnt be a good idea.

I have a 29 gal heated tank kept around 80 degrees and running a 70 gal filter.
I have:
1 discus, he’s about 2 in right now
1 apistogramma
1 rainbow fish
1 female betta, probably wont stay in this tank though
1 clown loach, he will get about 7 in
1 blue ram
1 pleco, he will get about 4 in

The thing is when I was doing more research on discus I found out that they are schooling fish. Is this true? The pet store that I got him from never mentioned this.

I’ve been feeding him brine shrimp, occassionally beef heart, freeze dried daphnia and sinking pellet food. He ignores the pellet food and daphnia and I can’t really tell if he’s eating the shrimp or beef heart. The pet store said they were feeding him pellet food and I bought the brand they said they were using. I’ve had him for about a week. Is it normal that he’s not showing any sign of wanting to eat?

He’s not showing any signs of sickness and his color is nice and bright. He seems more active when I don’t have the tank light on. I do have my curtains open with tank across the room.

Discus are schooling fish and do best in groups of 5 or more.

If you place them in the same aquarium as more assertive fish species, e.g. Angelfish, your Discus might be without food and starve or suffer from malnutrition. More docile species are therefore recommended as tank mates. Keeping several Discus cichlids together is a very good idea since Discus cichlids feel more at ease when in a group.

Keeping this in mind the fish is more then likely suffering from being the only Discus in the tank, and from having more agressive tank mates.

The only cichlid that could fit in there is a dwarf cichlid called the “Many Banded Shell Dweller” – and that’s pushing it by itself, why not splurge for a 20 gallon long? then you could keep them comfortably or even keep a convict

Look up rams and kribs. You wouldn’t really be able to have anything else in the tank but they are certianly colorful.
