Question by Mark S : i need cool fish suggestions. something that has color and a peaceful personality! please answer?
ok, currently i have smaller tetras, guppies, platties, cherry barbs, cories, albino brislte nose pleco, and 2 male dwarf gouramis. i would like to get 1 or 2 fish that has a woah factor and is very peaceful and not agressive at all, i could be a bottom dweller, schooling fish, single fish.. anything! i was thinking one ram or 1 assorted apistogramma? but leaning more towards the ram. are rams hard to keep? do they die easy? what about ghost glass catifsh? if i got 6 of them would they be swimming around everywhere or hiding? i do no want a fish that hides all the time! i want something that is nice and happpy and eneretic. what about rainbows? is their any rainbows that you recamend? its a 75 gal tank and i have alota room for something. so could i get only 3 rainbows or some sort that gets like 3 inches max? any suggestions of fish you lie? thanks

From the list below, what is the best tank mates for male guppies?

Question by Mark S : From the list below, what is the best tank mates for male guppies?
Ok I’ve heard a few beautiful fish that I could add with them and they are either….. 1.rams- how many is a good number and are they nice towards guppies? 2. Honey dwarf gourami- how many would get along with eachother, and I have another tank with a flaming dwarf gourami and would him and the honey dwarf gourami make good tank mates in my community tank and not be agressive towards eachother or my other fish? And my last option is 3. Apistogramma cacatuoides- I don’t no anything about them so every information is apreciTed! R these fish peaceful fish with eachother and other community fish? Out of all of these 3 options, would any or all of them get along with female bettas?

Best Answer:

Answer by immatt
1) bad idea. Rams are a bit aggressive for guppies and want a warmer tank
2) not too bad of an idea. A male and female will be fine, or a few female, but not two male. Exact stocking numbers depends on tank size.
3) same problem as with the rams.

The cichlids tend to nip the fins of the betta. The betta often are fine with guppies, but eat the fry. I house female betta with guppies all the time. I’ve had the female betta kill a female guppy as she was birthing because the betta was over zealous in getting the fry, but that has only happened once. I still get some guppy fry even with the several female betta. (20 gallon tank, well planted)
The gourami and betta often fight with each other.

Q&A: Can cardinals be placed in an Amazon leaf littered aquarium?

Question by symphysodon9981 : Can cardinals be placed in an Amazon leaf littered aquarium?
My aquarium is 60x30x45cm, now containing 2 discus, 2 rams, 2 apistogramma, 1 royal pleco and 5 sterbai cory. My tank is a bare tank, but it is a leaf littered base with a 2 java fern, a giant anubias at the back of the tank. My water is very blackwater, with a dark tea leaf color. Can a few cardinals be placed in my aquarium, i know some people say they must be kept in a black substrate and not bare tanks.
Oh yeah, is it overcrowded?? Actually it is 60x45x45, but at the back of the tank, 60x15x45cm of the space is used as an back filter.
Please give me more advice. Thank you.

Answer by catx
Your tank is overcrowded to be honest and I wouldn’t be considering Cardinals right now.

Your tank is only approx 30 US Gallons (about 120 litres). For your fish to be happy, especially the Discus once they are adult and for those Dwarf Cichlids to have territories, you’d be better off with more like over 55 US Gallons (about 200 litres), at least double what you have now.

In a larger tank a shoal of Cardinals should work. Remember that Cardinals get larger than Neons and are substantially more fragile.

Apistos and rams?

Question by Tyler V : Apistos and rams?
I just added my pair of apistos (Apistogramma cacatuoides) to my 55 gallon tank which is also home to a pair of balloon rams. I rearranged the tank so that the pairs could establish their own territories. However, there seems to be hostility between the male ram and male apisto. They nudge eachother once in a while (no fin nipping, I made sure). The females spend most of their time on opposite sides of the tank but the males cross over sides.

So, do you think this is just them getting used to one another? Besides the nudging there isn’t any other aggression.

Also, what other fish would you reccomend to occupy the mid and upper layers of my tank?

Thanks for all your help

Answer by nosoop4u246
They are just trying to establish dominance– whoever backs down first will lose. If you don’t let them settle this now, it will be an ongoing battle, so allow them to have their little war (which will mostly involve facing off, flaring, retreating, and repeating), and they’ll figure it out on their own– it won’t hurt them.

For other fish, you’ve got a lot of options… Anything from Tetras, Barbs, Rasboras, Killifish, Rainbows, Hatchets, more docile Gouramis (Pearls, Licorice, Chocolate, Dwarves, etc.), Angelfish, Discus, Festivums, Acara, Silver Dollars (not if you have live plants), African Butterfly Fish, Ctenopoma, Glass Catfish, Danios, Upside Down Catfish, or basically anything that won’t eat the other fish.

Q&A: Going by LiveAquaria, how many of these kinds of fish can stay in my 36 gallon tank?

Question by : Going by LiveAquaria, how many of these kinds of fish can stay in my 36 gallon tank?
Like I mentioned before I’m in talks of getting my 2 oscars out of there as soon as the guy gets things together. I was browsing on LiveAquaria.com and I came across a few fish that sparked my interests.

How many of these fish can I keep in my 36 gallon tank without them outgrowing it or overloading my bio-filter and etc.?

1. Gold Severum: https://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=830+889+922&pcatid=922

2. Assorted Apistogramma: https://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=830+2855+1087&pcatid=1087

Like can only 2 Severums stay or 5 of those Apistogramma go in or how many of those 2 fish could i mix in together and etc.

Answer by Ika
depends how big they are. it is a gallon fer one inch fish, so if your fish is two inches it would take up two gallons same gos for 4 5 6 7 8 and up and up.

Q&A: Would this be a good combo for a 42 gallon?

Question by Animal lover : Would this be a good combo for a 42 gallon?
36″x15″x18″ tank.

This is what I have, in my 6.6 gallon:
6 Fancy Guppies
2 Male Dwarf Gouramis
1 Sterbai Corydoras Catfish
1 Golden Otocinclus

This is what I want, for when I upgrade to the 42 gallon.
4 Sterbai Cory Catfish
3 Golden Otocinclus
6 Fancy Guppies
2 Bolivain Butterfly Rams
1 Apistogramma of some sort – can they be alone ? I’ll have 2 if im sure they arent both males…

Will that be ok?
P.S I chose the Bolivian over the Blue ram, mainly because I know that they are more hardy, and im a beginner. Are the Apistogramma hardy too ?
If they aren’t, please suggest another type of peaceful dwarf cichlid that could fit in nicely.

The tank will be planted.

Answer by Richard Andrei S
i am not quite sure of this because of the cichlids (they’re not my specialty), i don’t think it is a good idea filling the tank with cichlids and guppies since guppies are very small live bearers. i really can’t suggest you anything but you can try since you have a relatively big tank. just have it heavily planted so that the cichlids and the guppies will have different territories and will not see each other that often. i know cories are better live in a number of 7 or more, make them in an odd number. good luck!

Q&A: Tank Set-Up Question3?

Question by cougar1331puma : Tank Set-Up Question3?
Ok, I am going to ask 4 questions with four different set ups altogether.
This is the third.
It is a South American Cichlid Tank.
In optimal conditions, which favor all fish equally, would it work out with:
1 Male Dwarf Cockatoo Cichlid, Apistogramma cacatuoides
3 Female Dwarf Cockatoo Cichlids,
Apistogramma cacatuoides
1 Male Keyhole Cichlid, Cleithracara maronii
2 Female Keyhole Cichlids, Cleithracara maronii
4 Angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare
2 (Breeding Pair) of Discus Cichlids, Symphysodon aequifasciatus

55 gallon
This situation is hypothetical, far from being instilled.
As you can see I want many of these to breed, and I will set up optimal conditions for each.
Also, do not reprimand me as this is JUST HYPOTHETICAL!
Thanks in advanced to everyone!

Answer by brddg1974
This is definitely too many fish for a 55 gal aquarium. One breeding pair of Discus would be possible but cramped in a 55. 4 Angels would be too much for a 55 as they would come into conflict with each other when two pair off to breed. The other cichlids you name I haven’t had any experience with personally.

Shell dwelling cichlid (multifaciatus)?

Question by : Shell dwelling cichlid (multifaciatus)?
Okay… so stress killed my male Apistogramma and they’re about 25 dollars a fish so I don’t think I’ll be getting another any time soon… (the reason I think it’s stress is that there was a lay over in Dallas for 18 hours and they came in and were immediately taken elsewhere and put in another high energy aquarium…. the female is still alive… does she need her own kind?)

1. What’s the minimum amount of these cichlids I should keep (shelldwellers) Could I start with a pair?
2. What’s the minimum amount of gallons for these guys? (I’ve heard 10 is that true?)
3. THey like hard water? THe water where I live is very hard.
4. They like sand and shells? WHere would I get shells and do they have to be a specific kind?
5. Are they too aggressive for a community setting? (They’ll be going somewhere separate from the other cichlids)

About my female Apistogramma….

1. Does she need to be in a group?
2. Should I make the effort to get another male Apistogramma?
3. She doesn’t come out of her cichlid stone and I have no idea if she’s eating….. I”m really worried about it her…

Best Answer:

Answer by I heart beets
i’ve done a little research on these guys so i’ll answer what i can.
1. I think you should start with a fairly large number since they do like being in groups, although they don’t school together.
2. 10 min, but go larger if you can.
3. Not sure
4. Escargot shells on ebay. not sure about any other kinds, but maybe aquabid might have some shells for shellies.
5. not sure about agression, but I think they do better in a species tank.

Urgent help needed!!?

apistogramma
by h963

Question by Scrappy : Urgent help needed!!?
I have a female apistogramma who I am waiting to move into another tank but todat I am going to buy a shoal of harlequin rasbora for that tank. Should I let the Apistogramma get a territory first or should I let the harlequins get used to the tank

Best Answer:

Answer by DeadDude
It shouldn’t really matter either way, but I would suggest releasing the rasbora first and then letting the apistogramma establish a territory.
Thats the way I plan on doing it with as I stock my tank. Releasing a couple schools of fish and then adding German Blue Rams.
